What Do You Think?

Have you ever thought about how you think?

Take a moment to notice. What happens when you think of …

A duck? … A dog? … A horse? … Chocolate cake?
… The song, “Happy Birthday!”

Notice how you also have responses to those thoughts.
Some make you happy. Some make you remember.

Those are other thoughts!  We’ll talk about how that works some other time.

For now, just stay with your original thoughts.

When you thought of a duck, what’s the first thing that came to mind?

Was it a real duck? Was it one of those little toy ducks? Or a cartoon?

Did you hear it quack? Or squeak?

And the dog? Did you feel yourself pet it? Or hear it bark? Or see it?

How about the horse? Did you get the sensation of riding it, with the wind in your hair?
Or patting it and hearing it snort or whinny?

What about the chocolate cake? Did you roll it around in your mouth, tasting it on your tongue, or maybe see a picture in your mind of a gorgeous chocolate cake?

And what happened to it when I said, “Think of the song, Happy Birthday”?

Did you end up with a party in your head, with candles, and laughter?

I hope you did, because that’s how it works!

However you communicate on the outside, however you sense and perceive the world, that’s how you think on the inside.

You think in terms of your senses! It’s really that simple. You see pictures, hear sounds, recreate conversations, talk to yourself, remember smells, sense space and objects in your environment, even taste things that you vividly imagine.

Fortunately, there’s a quality difference between how you do it in your head, and how it appears on the outside. Otherwise, how would you know what was real?

Some people do struggle with that, like when you have a dream, and don’t know it until you wake up feeling that it was so ‘real’.

That’s another whole subject by itself. For now, just observe that you think in terms of your senses. That opens up a whole new, wonderful and exciting world of being able to play with your mind.

Can you imagine what delightful things you might come up with, if you chose to?

“See” you … next time!
